Annals of an Anglophile
I had a hard time making it through the DVR recording of Liverpool F.C.'s Champions League loss at Besiktas last night. Without a win in the group stage, Liverpool desperately needed points from this match the Turkish side's home ground. All they got was another own goal from Sami Hyypia. Now the team that is built on Champions League glory is staring a group stage exit right in the face.
It's hard to think about this defeat in Turkey without thinking back to 2005, and Liverpool's Champions League triumph in Istanbul. Other than the final in Istanbul being the most memorable sporting event I have ever watched, that match bled with a passion unlike anything I could ever hope to experience.
3 goals down at halftime, only to be carried to penalty kicks on the shoulders of your hometown hero of a captain, this was the scene as those lads took their victory lap:
I had heard You'll Never Walk Alone many times before - especially listening to the final beautiful moments of Pink Floyd's 'Fearless' - but this scene of collective celebration was one of those perfect moments that transcends time or culture or sport.
The song comes from Rogers & Hammerstein's 'Carousel', and made its way to England via Liverpool's Gerry & The Pacemakers who made it a hit in the early 60's. Sinatra covered it, Nina Simone covered it, Elvis covered it. Liverpool made it their own.
They say that Liverpool's home fans at Anfield can will the ball into the goal with their ferocious passion. Down 3-nil At halftime in Istanbul, the Reds supporters broke into a YNWA that shook the stadium. And willed their team to win.
Yesterday's loss is the latest in an string of blows since the final in '05 - the team has been bought by Americans, and was out-classed in last year's Champions League final in Athens. You can't win them all, and Liverpool knows that better than anyone.
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There’s a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you’ll never walk alone...
You’ll never walk alone.

AFV
Just watched some AFV, decided to blog.
Pretty good episode.
As described by my DVR:
"A really bad day at work; children make very big messes; a parrot has some choice words for a cat."
Tom was really on tonight. Thought his joke about the guy slamming his bike into the mailbox was dead on. Made an allusion to the fact that mailboxes are generally filled with junk mail, but that this mailbox is now filled with male junk. Noiz. Also made a good one for the video with a puppy falling into a pond. Said that people usually pick up dogs at the pound, not at the pond. Another play on words. His bread and butter.
Here's a good balls montage (one of heidi's passions)
Move that bus just started. I hear there is a Hanson cameo.
